Full disclosure before anything else: we are one of the companies on this page. Kind Water Co is family-owned, based in Marion, and we install water softeners across the Cedar Rapids metro. We wrote this because nobody local publishes a straight comparison, and because a page that only says "pick us" is worth nothing to you. Here is the actual field, the facts we could verify, and the questions that should decide it.

Company details were read from each company's public website and listings in August 2026. All are independent businesses unaffiliated with Kind Water Co. This is not a ranking — we are not in a position to rank our own competitors, and any local company that told you it could would be selling you something.
Cedar Rapids lime-softens its water. The utility adds slaked lime specifically to reduce hardness minerals before distribution, and the city's own FAQ describes the finished water as moderately hard at 6–9 grains per gallon (100–150 mg/L). Raw water around 15.8 grains leaves the plant at roughly 6.5–7.
That matters because a Cedar Rapids household is a genuinely different sale from a Marion one, where The Gazette reported 18–20 grains unsoftened. Anyone pitching you in Cedar Rapids on "Iowa has the hardest water in the country" is quoting a regional generality over your own utility's published number. Compare across the metro on our Linn County water page or hardness by city.
One more Cedar Rapids specific: CR-supplied water is chloraminated. Ordinary activated carbon reduces chloramine but not thoroughly — genuine chloramine removal takes a full catalytic carbon tank. That is why our catalytic upgrade exists as a city option (+$150 on a standard build) and why we mention it rather than quietly selling a filter that underperforms on this specific water.
All-in: equipment, installation by a licensed plumbing professional, taxes, lifetime parts warranty.

Seriously. Call Culligan, call a Kinetico dealer, call us, and compare the four numbers that matter: total installed cost, warranty terms, year-six service cost, and who owns the equipment. We are comfortable being compared — that is the entire reason our prices are on this page.
Free in-home test, real numbers, written price the same visit, no expiring discount. Call or text 319-319-6566, email ryan@kindwaterco.com, or get an instant quote. Serving Cedar Rapids, Marion, Hiawatha, Robins and the rest of Linn County.
The main options are Culligan of Marion (319-377-6441), Kinetico through dealers including Waterhouse Water Systems and The Water Shop, locally owned Eastern Iowa Soft Water, and Kind Water Co — us, family-owned in Marion. Of those, we are the only one publishing installed prices on our website.
Moderately hard. Cedar Rapids lime-softens its supply, and the city's own FAQ describes the finished water as 6–9 grains per gallon (100–150 mg/L), down from roughly 15.8 grains raw. That is very different from Marion at 18–20 grains unsoftened — so the right equipment differs by town, not by state.
Ours are $2,500 for a softener with whole-home filtration, $2,850 with reverse osmosis added, and $1,900 for softener only — all-in with licensed installation, taxes and a lifetime parts warranty. Other local companies quote in-home rather than publishing, so get their total installed figure in writing to compare.
Ask five things: total installed price in dollars; who installs it and are they licensed; what the warranty covers and for how long; what a service call and filters cost in year six; and whether they measured your water in grains per gallon rather than performing a demonstration. Get all of it in writing.
Possibly. Cedar Rapids-supplied water is chloraminated, and ordinary activated carbon reduces chloramine but not thoroughly — genuine removal takes a full catalytic carbon tank. Our catalytic upgrade is +$150 on a standard system. Marion and Hiawatha run plain chlorine, where standard activated carbon is fine.
