We checked the local dealer's water softener page (culliganmarion.com, serving Cedar Rapids, Hiawatha, Marion and Linn County, 319-377-6441) in August 2026. Here is what is published, quoted directly:
That is a real offer and a real company — Culligan has been in this business since 1936 and the Marion dealership serves this area every day. We are not disputing the quality of the equipment. We are pointing at a specific, verifiable gap: you cannot compute what you will pay.
A monthly figure without a stated term cannot be turned into a total. $26/month for 36 months is $936. For 60 months it is $1,560. For 120 months it is $3,120. Those are three completely different purchases, and the page does not say which one applies — or whether the number is a rental, a finance payment, or a promotional rate that resets.
The same is true of the $9.95 intro rental: it is explicitly "for the first three months," and month four is not published. If you are comparing offers, the only number that lets you compare is the total installed cost and, for a rental, the monthly rate times the years you expect to keep it.
We are not going to guess Culligan's numbers for you. Ask the dealer these four questions and write the answers down: What is the cash purchase price installed? What is the monthly rate after any promotional period? For how many months? Do I own it at the end?

Culligan rents; we do not. That is a genuine difference in business model rather than a knock on either one. Renting means low upfront cost, service usually rolled in, and no equity — payments continue as long as you have the system. Owning means one payment (or a financed schedule that ends) and the equipment is yours.
The honest math: a rental at $40/month is $480 a year and $4,800 over ten years, with nothing owned at the end. Our standard $2,850 system is $2,850, once. Culligan's Cedar Rapids page states that "hard water occurs naturally in more than 85% of the water supply in North America, including Cedar Rapids, IA." That is true as far as it goes, but it is a continental statistic, not a Cedar Rapids measurement.
The Cedar Rapids measurement is this: the city lime-softens its water, and its own FAQ describes the finished product as moderately hard at 6–9 grains per gallon (100–150 mg/L). Marion, ten minutes away, runs 18–20 grains unsoftened per The Gazette. Those two households need very different equipment, and neither number comes from a North American average.
