In June 2025, Central Iowa Water Works — which serves about 600,000 people in the Des Moines metro — issued a lawn watering ban after nitrate in its source rivers climbed well past the federal drinking water limit of 10 milligrams per liter. Per Iowa Public Radio's reporting, "On June 8, the Raccoon River hit 20.55 mg/L," and the Des Moines River reached 17.15 mg/L on June 12. The ban stayed in place for over a month while treatment kept finished water within standards.
The 2026 season started even earlier. CIWW turned on its nitrate removal facility on January 6 — the first January run since 2015 — and by June it had moved to Stage III water conservation, with Des Moines Water Works reporting that its very best source had been above 10 mg/L for almost 90 days — the most on record. Through all of it, the utility emphasized: "While we continue to meet all state and federal drinking water standards, we have reached a point where conservation is necessary to preserve treatment capacity and ensure reliable service for everyone."
