Those orange or rust-colored stains in your tub, toilet bowl, and sinks are almost always iron — one of the most common things we find in Eastern Iowa well water. The good news: iron at these levels is a cosmetic problem, not typically a health one, and it's completely fixable. Here's how to clean the stains today, and how to stop them for good.

Why Well Water Leaves Orange Stains

Most Eastern Iowa wells draw from groundwater that spends its whole life moving through limestone and dolomite bedrock, and it picks up dissolved minerals along the way — including iron. Straight from the well, that iron is usually invisible. Your water can look perfectly clear in the glass. But the moment it meets air, the iron oxidizes — literally rusts — and settles as an orange film on porcelain, grout, and anywhere water sits or drips.

It doesn't take much iron to do it, either. The EPA's guideline for iron in drinking water is just 0.3 mg/L — and it's what's called a secondary standard, meaning it's based on staining and taste, not health. The Minnesota Department of Health puts it plainly: water above 0.3 mg/L is "usually considered objectionable," causing yellow, red, or brown stains on dishes, laundry, and plumbing fixtures, and sometimes a metallic taste. Plenty of private wells in our corner of Iowa run well above that line — which is why the toilet ring keeps winning.

How to Clean Iron Stains (Without Setting Them)

For light stains, start with white vinegar

Plain white vinegar is a mild acid, and acids are what dissolve rust. New Mexico State University Extension notes that vinegar "removes hard water deposits from glassware, rust stains from sinks, and tarnish from brass and copper." Pour or spray it on, let it sit 15–30 minutes, scrub with a brush, and rinse. For a toilet bowl, add a few cups and let it soak before scrubbing.

For set-in stains, reach for an oxalic acid cleanser

When vinegar isn't enough, the go-to recommended by university extension services is oxalic acid — "an effective rust remover," per NMSU Extension, and the active ingredient in Bar Keepers Friend, the powder cleanser most grocery stores carry. Zud and many toilet-bowl rust removers work the same way. Make a paste, let it sit briefly, scrub, and rinse well. Wear rubber gloves and keep it away from little hands — NMSU Extension notes oxalic acid is poisonous and corrosive, which is exactly why it works so well on rust.

Never use chlorine bleach on iron stains

This is the one that surprises people, because bleach feels like the nuclear option for any stain. With iron, it backfires. University of Georgia Extension's stain-removal guidance says it directly: "Do not use chlorine bleach on rust. Chlorine bleach will set these stains." That advice was written for laundry, but the chemistry is the same on porcelain: bleach is an oxidizer — it turns dissolved iron into even more rust and bonds it to the surface. University of Nebraska–Lincoln Extension adds that ordinary soaps and detergents won't lift iron stains either, and chlorine bleach can actually intensify them. One more safety note from NMSU Extension: never mix bleach with toilet bowl cleaners or rust removers, because the combination produces a poisonous gas. Pick one product, use it alone, and rinse thoroughly before trying anything else.
