Cherokee draws every gallon it serves from the Dakota sandstone, roughly two hundred feet under the city. The water arrives clear, very low in nitrate and free of the orange staining Dakota wells are notorious for, because Cherokee runs a plant built specifically to pull iron and manganese out of it. What that plant does not do — what nothing in it is capable of doing — is take out the calcium and magnesium. And the last time a laboratory measured how much of them Cherokee’s water carries, the sample was drawn in January 1983.

Iowa keeps drinking-water sample results in the DNR Drinking Water Portal, and that is where a hardness figure for a town normally comes from. For Cherokee it comes back empty. We queried all six hardness analyte codes the state uses — 84 (hardness, total as calcium carbonate), 85, 86, 87, 732 and 829 — across the whole record, and every one returned “No data found”. A control query for sodium on the same system, with identical parameters, returned fourteen rows, so the request was well formed and the absence is real. Cherokee has never reported a hardness result to the state’s compliance database. It is not required to: hardness is not a regulated contaminant, and no Iowa utility has to measure it.
So the numbers on this page come from a second Iowa DNR primary source instead — the archived Municipal Water-Supply Inventory, a well-by-well file of state laboratory mineral analyses hosted on the DNR Source Water Protection Tracker. Cherokee’s inventory holds 46 mineral analyses across 16 well records reaching back to the 1930s. That is a genuine state record, but it is not the sample portal, and we would rather you know exactly which drawer a figure came out of before you read it.
Only one of Cherokee’s three active wells has ever had a mineral analysis filed, and it is the oldest of them: well #4, sunk on Maple Street by the Thorpe Well Company in August 1951, 199 feet deep, with bedrock just 30 feet down. It is still pumping today. Every hardness reading on its file is a raw sample taken at the wellhead or the well’s own sample tap.
There is one later analysis, dated 3 April 1987, but the laboratory left its hardness line blank. It reports calcium at 91.0 mg/L and magnesium at 25.0, which by the standard calculation comes to 330 mg/L, or 19.3 grains. We checked that method against the 1983 sample from the same well — it produces 365 against a reported 367 — so the arithmetic is trustworthy, but it is still arithmetic rather than a laboratory result, which is why the headline range above stops at the seven measured values. The verdict does not change either way. The USGS calls anything over 180 mg/L, or 10.5 grains, very hard; Cherokee’s lowest figure is roughly double that.
Cherokee’s two newer wells have no chemistry on file whatsoever. Well #11 went in during 1997 as the replacement for well #3 and sits within fifty feet of it; well #12 was drilled by Layne Western on 5 June 2000 to 210 feet, screened from 140 feet down and gravel packed. Neither has ever had a mineral analysis filed. We are not going to invent one. One last piece of well history is worth knowing: the 2019 sanitary survey lists well #1, drilled in 1936, as one of four wells then in service, rotated one at a time, and state sample records still named it into late 2025. It is now listed as plugged.
Every Cherokee well, active or sealed, is completed in the Dakota — a Cretaceous sandstone underlying northwest Iowa that behaves nothing like the Jordan and Silurian-Devonian aquifers supplying the eastern half of the state. The Source Water Protection Tracker lists Dakota for all eleven of Cherokee’s well records, and the archived inventory lists Dakota or Cretaceous for all sixteen.
Being sealed under that much rock gives Cherokee a genuinely good profile on the things the state does regulate. Nitrate at the plant tap read 0.41 mg/L on 18 August 2026, and none of the 53 nitrate samples on record has topped 1.3 mg/L, because surface nitrogen does not reach a confined aquifer. Combined radium came back under 1.00 picocuries per liter in 2021, and arsenic at 0.0034 mg/L in 2022, comfortably under the federal limit of 0.010.
The Dakota’s downside arrives as hardness, iron, manganese, sulfate and one less common passenger: ammonia. The DNR’s sanitary survey of 5 November 2019 records that “all of the wells are believed to have ammonia present at varying levels” and that the system consequently operates at breakpoint chlorination — dosing chlorine past the point where the ammonia consumes it. The ammonia is natural and comes out of the ground, and it is why the federal treatment file for Cherokee carries a chloramines entry sitting next to ordinary chlorination.
That same survey sets out the treatment train in a single sentence: aeration, detention, potassium permanganate, a four-cell gravity sand filter for iron and manganese removal, blended polyphosphate for corrosion control, and gas chlorination for disinfection. Fifteen EPA treatment records match it step for step, filed under objectives for filtration, metals removal, corrosion control and disinfection. No softening objective appears anywhere — no lime, no soda ash, no ion exchange, no membrane.
Judged on metals, the plant does its job and the numbers prove it. Raw well #4 carried 1.1 mg/L of iron in 1983, nearly four times the 0.3 mg/L secondary standard, alongside 0.30 mg/L of manganese. At the plant tap every year since 2019, manganese has read between under 0.0005 and 0.0226 mg/L, the most recent being 0.0226 on 15 October 2025. DNR staff sampled it themselves during the survey and got under 0.02. That inspection closed with zero significant deficiencies, zero minor deficiencies and zero requirements.
None of it removes a single grain of hardness. Calcium and magnesium pass through aeration, permanganate, sand and phosphate unchanged, because not one of those processes is built to catch them. The polyphosphate at the end sequesters iron and manganese so they cannot stain fixtures downstream; it does not remove hardness and it does not conceal it, since dissolved hardness was never visible in the glass to begin with. The practical result for a homeowner is water that looks excellent and still lays scale inside the water heater, film on the shower door and spots on the glassware. Cherokee’s plant is a good plant. Hardness was simply never on its job description.
Sodium is measured here, and measured recently: 39.37 mg/L at the plant tap on 14 July 2025, within a series that has run between 22 and 51.8 mg/L since 1983. That figure matters for a specific reason. An ion-exchange softener works by trading calcium and magnesium for sodium, and it adds roughly 8 mg/L of sodium for every grain of hardness it takes out, so at twenty-plus grains the addition is real and sits on top of Cherokee’s existing baseline. If someone in the house is watching sodium, the two straightforward answers are a potassium chloride fill instead of salt, or reverse osmosis at the kitchen tap, which gives you unsoftened drinking and cooking water no matter what the softener is doing.

Two separate systems carry the Cherokee name and serve the country around it — Cherokee Rural Water’s Cherokee subsystem, PWSID IA1811001, serving 3,315 people, and its Mill Creek subsystem, IA1800900, serving 1,451.
