In 2022 Ida Grove went looking for different water. The city sank Well #9 three hundred and twenty feet into the Dakota Sandstone, a separate aquifer from the shallow alluvial wells it had pumped since the 1940s. The Iowa DNR tested the new well twice that year and got 310 and 320 milligrams per liter of hardness. The old alluvial entry point tested 352 the same summer. That is a 258-foot drop into different rock for a gain of about two grains per gallon, and the plant does nothing to the rest. Depending on which well is running, an Ida Grove house gets roughly 18 to 21 grains of untreated hardness.

The Iowa DNR Source Water Protection Tracker lists nine wells for Ida Grove and marks six of them plugged. The retired set runs from Well #2 in March 1946 to Wells #5 and #6 in September 1993, at depths from 65 to 358 feet, and it crosses both aquifers: #4 at 358 feet and #5 at 143 feet were Dakota wells, the rest alluvial. Ida Grove has been down to the sandstone before.
What is left working is a pair. Well #8, drilled on 20 June 2002 on the east side, is alluvial and only 62 feet deep. Well #9, on the same side of town, is Dakota Sandstone at 320 feet; the DNR leaves its drilling date blank, but the federal facility record names it Well #9 (2022). Well #7, drilled four days after #8 in June 2002 and 66 feet into the same shallow alluvium, sits on the west side as a standby source. The federal database shows it deactivated in February 2019, yet the state sampled it in July 2022, so it is a reserve that still gets used rather than an abandoned hole.
Two working wells, 258 feet apart in depth and in two different rock formations, is why the hardness here is a range rather than a number.
Four hardness samples exist in the Iowa DNR portal for Ida Grove, and every one of them was taken in 2022. Dated plainly, because that matters:
The honest comparison is the 352 from the shallow alluvial entry point against the 310 and 320 from the deep Dakota well, measured within six months of each other. The Dakota water is genuinely the softest water Ida Grove has, and at 18.1 grains it is still nearly double the 10.5 grains the USGS calls very hard.
Two caveats belong on those figures, and we would rather print them than let a homeowner discover them. First, the sampling station that produced the 352 was retired on 27 September 2023, and there is no hardness sample at all at the current blended entry point. So 352 describes the pre-2023 Well #8-only supply, not today's mix. Second, all four numbers are four years old. What the record supports is that today's blended tap water falls somewhere between 310 and 352 mg/L, which is 18.1 to 20.6 grains per gallon. That is a real range, not a hedge, and it is why we still measure at your own sink.
A page like this is worth nothing if the softening question is answered by guesswork, so here is exactly how the answer was reached.
The treatment record. EPA SDWIS holds five treatment records for PWSID IA4728067, all of them on Plant #1. Two carry the disinfection objective, entered as chlorination and gaseous chlorination. Three carry the iron-removal objective and all three read as sequestration, two of them naming the phosphate. Not one carries a softening objective. That absence is worth more here than it might be elsewhere, because in Iowa the common filing error runs the other way: several towns log the same polyphosphate under a softening code, which makes an unsoftened system look softened. Ida Grove files its polyphosphate under iron removal, so there is no misleading code to untangle.
The sodium. An ion-exchange softener works by trading calcium and magnesium for sodium, adding roughly 7.85 mg/L of sodium for each grain of hardness it takes out. A municipal plant stripping twenty grains would push about 157 mg/L of sodium into the finished water. Ida Grove's active blended entry point measured 11.97 mg/L on 18 April 2024 and 11.13 mg/L on 25 January 2024, against 10 to 11 mg/L raw in Well #9. Earlier entry-point samples from 2003 through 2021 sat in the 8 to 10 mg/L range. Water does not pass through ion exchange and come out with its sodium unchanged.
The dissolved solids, as corroboration. Lime softening precipitates calcium out of the water and drops total dissolved solids sharply. Raw Well #9 measured 380 mg/L in December 2022; the distribution system measured 390 mg/L in March 2024. Those are two different sampling points fifteen months apart, so the ten-milligram difference proves nothing by itself. It is simply consistent with a plant that leaves the mineral load where it found it.
The whole train fits in a sentence. Raw water from Well #8, Well #9 or both goes to Plant #1 for gas chlorination and a polyphosphate dose, then to the blended entry point the state records as Wells 8 and 9 Blended, then to the elevated tank and the mains. There is no filter, no aerator, no lime, no ion exchange and no membrane anywhere in it.
Sequestration is the part homeowners misread, and it is the only chemical step here beyond disinfection. A sequestering polyphosphate does not remove iron or manganese. It binds them so they stay dissolved instead of oxidizing into the orange and black staining that turns up on laundry and porcelain. For a small utility that is a sensible and inexpensive way to run a distribution system. It also does nothing at all to calcium and magnesium, and calcium and magnesium are what hardness is. Every grain the aquifer supplies arrives at your meter.
The retired records tell the rest of the story. Ida Grove's inactive sampling stations include one named for Wells 1, 2, 3, 5 and 6 and another called Well #3 preblend after carbon treatment, both switched off on 3 January 2003 — the old plant ran carbon on Well #3, which is taste and odor work, not softening. And the only lime-softening record attached to anything in Ida Grove belongs to a privately owned two-connection system, PWSID IA4728785, that the federal database deactivated on 19 November 2002. It never served the city's water system.
