How hard is North Liberty's water?

About 5 to 6 grains per gallon, which lands in the "moderately hard" band on the U.S. Geological Survey scale. (One grain equals 17.1 mg/L of calcium carbonate, so 5–6 grains works out to roughly 85–103 mg/L.)

That number has a nice story behind it. North Liberty draws its water from the Jordan and Silurian aquifers, and for years the tap water ran around 10 grains per gallon. Then in 2018, the city opened a new treatment plant that uses reverse-osmosis and nano-filtration to pull out much of the aquifer mineral content. When the plant came online, the city advised residents with softeners to dial their hardness settings down from 10 grains to about 5 or 6 — and that guidance remains the best public number for North Liberty hardness. It also matches what we see on test strips in local kitchens.

The city's plant did the heavy lifting — a softener finishes the job

Credit where it's due: North Liberty's treatment plant is one of the most advanced municipal setups in Eastern Iowa, and it took the hardness problem from "hard" to "half as hard." But reverse osmosis at the plant isn't the same as zero grains at your faucet. Five to six grains per gallon still means:

• Water spots on glasses and stainless steel, and a film on shower glass
• Scale gradually building inside your water heater, dishwasher, and tankless coils
• Soap and detergent that don't quite lather or rinse the way they should
• Laundry that comes out a little stiffer than it needs to be
