Here it is plainly. The EPA SDWIS violation table lists Princeton Water Supply, PWSID IA8273061, with contaminant 1040 and violation code 01 — a health-based maximum contaminant level violation for nitrate — measured at 12.1 mg/L, compliance period beginning September 1, 2024. The same record shows the town returned to compliance on October 4, 2024. A separate nitrate monitoring and reporting violation is listed beginning May 1, 2024, and SDWIS shows that one returned to compliance on June 12, 2024.
The source was Well #3, the roughly $800,000 well and water tower Princeton built in 2020 as its first backup supply in years. The town shut it off. Reporting by Inside Climate News, Sentient Media and KWQC in June 2026 says nitrate in that well later measured around 16 mg/L by spring 2025, with no follow-up sample back under the limit, and the well has stayed offline since. Princeton had already capped a 40-year-old auxiliary well in 2009 after years of nitrate trouble, which leaves the town today on one 1963 well, chlorinated.
None of that means water is leaving the Princeton system in violation now. The record says the opposite, and the town is in compliance. What it does mean is that Princeton is a place where nitrate is a live, documented subject, and where a homeowner who wants certainty about their own tap is better off testing it than assuming.
This is the part people get wrong, and it matters more here than in most towns. A water softener works by ion exchange, trading calcium and magnesium for sodium. That is exactly the right tool for hardness, scale, spotted glasses and soap that will not lather. It is not a nitrate treatment. Nitrate passes straight through a softener, and boiling concentrates it rather than removing it.

That is roughly 43.9 grains per gallon, the hardest figure on record anywhere in Scott County.
Now the caveat, because it is a real one. That was a one-off raw sample taken at the new well while it was being developed, and that well is the one now offline for nitrate. It is not a published typical hardness for what comes out of Princeton taps, and we will not dress it up as one. No hardness figure is published for the active 1963 well. Hardness is unregulated, so it is not a required line in any consumer confidence report, which is why most Scott County towns publish no number at all.
What is not in doubt is that nothing softens the water before it reaches your house. EPA SDWIS shows sodium hypochlorite chlorination as the only treatment at any Princeton plant.
