Four towns that stopped drilling their own wells

The reason one water plant matters to so many households here is that four separate municipalities gave up their own supplies and tied into it. Each of them now carries the purchased-groundwater source code in the federal database, an active connection labelled as coming from Southern Sioux County Rural Water, and a sampling station sitting on that line.

The wells they walked away from are old, and the dates tell the story on their own. Ireton retired municipal wells drilled in 1946 and 1967. Maurice retired one from 1915 and another from 1975. Craig retired wells from 1936 and 1974. Brunsville retired wells from 1971 and 1983. Every one of those is now filed as inactive. Struble, in neighbouring Plymouth County, no longer runs a public water system of its own — its system is filed inactive in the federal database.

One more record is worth knowing about: the old two-way tie between this system and Le Mars survives in the federal inventory only as a pair of demolished connections. There is no longer a second source to fall back on. The Ireton plant stands alone, and what it sends out is what every household on the grid gets.

For a homeowner that has a blunt practical consequence. Your city council does not set your water quality — a rural water association headquartered at Ireton does. Moving from Maurice to Craig will not change your water. Anything you want done about hardness has to happen inside your own house.

Six wells, two aquifers, one treatment plant

The Iowa DNR Source Water Protection Tracker lists the active wellfield as two distinct families. The deep D-series draws Dakota sandstone: D-1 at 448 feet drilled in 1979, D-2 at 470 feet in 1990, D-3 at 440 feet in 2001 and D-4 at 430 feet in 2017. The shallower I-series draws buried sand and gravel: I-1 at 186 feet from 2002 and I-2 at 180 feet from 2009.

Three older alluvial wells at 63, 64 and 69 feet, drilled between 1980 and 1989, are all plugged and carry no samples. A seventh production well, D-5, was sampled in October 2025 but is listed by the DNR at a proposed status and appears in neither the federal facility inventory nor the state well list, so it is not yet part of anyone's supply.

All six active wells feed a single treatment plant, and from there the water moves into two clearwells, two ground storage reservoirs and a transmission grid holding towers at Ireton, Maurice, Craig, Liberty and East Orange, with booster stations spaced along the rural mains. That single-plant design is why one treatment decision governs 2,168 connections at once.

What the plant takes out, and what it leaves in

Eighteen federal treatment records exist for this system, and all eighteen sit on the same plant. Read as a group, they describe the pieces of an iron and manganese plant and nothing else: forced-draft aeration, potassium permanganate oxidation, gravity filtration through sand and anthracite, and gaseous chlorination carrying a four-log virus inactivation credit. That is the standard sequence for a northwest Iowa groundwater plant fighting iron.

Here is why none of it touches your hardness. Aeration and permanganate work by oxidizing dissolved iron and manganese into solid particles, which the sand and anthracite beds then catch. Calcium and magnesium do not oxidize into filterable particles that way. They pass through aeration, through permanganate and through the filters entirely unchanged, and they are still there when the water reaches your water heater. The plant is doing exactly what it was designed to do; removing hardness was never on its list, and no Iowa utility is required to put it there.

Nothing downstream fills the gap. Ireton and Craig file no treatment records of their own at all. Maurice files a single one, for chlorination. Brunsville files phosphate sequestration under iron and manganese objectives, on facilities the federal database marks as retired — and sequestration holds minerals in solution rather than taking them out, so even at full strength it would leave hardness untouched.

What the hardness record does and does not say

Be careful with numbers here, because the published record is thin and it is easy to overstate. The Iowa DNR sample database holds exactly three hardness results for this system, ever.

  • 16 April 2009 — 276 mg/L (16.1 grains) at Well #I-2, an active buried sand-and-gravel well
  • 15 November 2017 — 332 mg/L (19.4 grains) at Well #D-4, an active Dakota well, sampled as the acceptance test before it went into service
  • 29 October 2025 — 414 mg/L (24.2 grains) at D-5, the proposed well that is not yet in service

All three are raw wellhead samples, taken before treatment. The 414 mg/L figure is the highest of the three published results, but quoting it as your water would be wrong: that well is not connected to anything you drink today. And the two usable figures cover only two of the six wells actually in service. D-1, D-2, D-3 and I-1 have no published hardness sample at all.

What can be said honestly is this. The two active wells with published data test 276 and 332 mg/L; the plant applies no process that lowers either number; and because all six wells blend through one train, the finished water could sit above 332 mg/L just as easily as below it. No finished-water or distribution hardness has been published for this system or for Ireton, Maurice, Craig or Brunsville — the state portal returns no data for all four. On the USGS scale, anything above 180 mg/L or 10.5 grains is very hard, and both published readings are far past that line. The sodium reading is the number to notice

Of the three numbers on this page, sodium is the one with a long finished-water record, because the plant's lab-sink tap is sampled as a routine distribution sample rather than a wellhead one. It reads 10.98 mg/L in April 2024, 10.6 in April 2021, 10.5 in April 2018, 10 in 2015 and 2012, and 11 in 2009, 2006 and 2003. Distribution samples out in the towns read 11 mg/L in 1985, 1988, 1991 and 1994. That is four decades inside a two-milligram band.

This matters for anyone weighing a softener. Ion exchange works by trading calcium and magnesium for a small quantity of sodium, roughly in proportion to the hardness it removes, and the sensible question is always what you are adding it to. On this system you are adding it to about 11 mg/L, which is a genuinely low starting point — and that steady low figure is itself confirmation that no ion exchange is happening anywhere upstream. Dissolved solids are far less well documented: 402 mg/L raw at D-4 and 330 mg/L raw at I-2, with the last distribution reading, 318 mg/L, dating to 1988.

Acreages still on a private well

Not every rural address between these towns is on the district. Plenty of acreages in southern Sioux County and northern Plymouth County still pump their own well, drawing the same aquifers the association does but without aeration, permanganate, filtration or chlorine in front of the tap. The Iowa DNR recommends testing a private well every year, and Iowa's Private Well Grants program pays for that testing through your county public health office in both counties.
