Vinton's water doesn't come from deep bedrock anymore. Per Iowa DNR's source water listing for PWSID 688053, the city's historic deep wells — drilled past 1,500 feet into the Cambrian-Ordovician — are listed as retired, and the three wells doing the work today sit between 90 and 122 feet down in a Buried Sand and Gravel aquifer, a buried river channel filled with sand and gravel. The city's own water quality report puts it plainly: "We have three shallow wells located around the treatment plant which pump raw water to the plant."
That shallow, sand-and-gravel groundwater comes up carrying two things Vinton has to deal with before it leaves the plant: dissolved iron and manganese, and hydrogen sulfide — the rotten-egg smell. And the city deals with them. Per the water quality report, raw water is run through two aerators to remove the hydrogen sulfide, then goes to a holding tank for its first dose of chlorine, then is "pumped through 3 iron filters to remove iron and manganese," with a second chlorine dose plus fluoride and a polyphosphate corrosion-control feed added as the water leaves the plant. Credit where it's due: that's real treatment, and it's aimed squarely at the two things — sulfur smell and iron staining — that untreated water from this aquifer would otherwise carry to the tap.
Here's the honest gap. Aeration and iron filtration remove iron, manganese, and sulfide. Neither one removes hardness. Calcium and magnesium pass straight through an iron filter, and Vinton's published treatment train includes no softening step and no hardness number.
