It can stain laundry and fixtures at levels as low as 0.05 mg/L, chlorine bleach actually makes the marks worse, and the fix starts with a free water test.
Manganese is one of the most ordinary minerals on earth. The Iowa DNR describes it as "a common, naturally-occurring mineral found in rocks, soil, groundwater, and surface water" — it's even a normal part of foods like grains, beans, and nuts. Dissolved in water, manganese is completely invisible. The trouble starts when it meets air or chlorine and oxidizes — turning into tiny brown-black solid particles. Those particles are your stains.
The EPA sets a secondary drinking water standard of 0.05 mg/L for manganese. Secondary standards are aesthetic guidelines — they're about staining, taste, and color, not safety. And manganese is remarkably picky: iron usually doesn't stain until 0.3 mg/L, but manganese makes its mark at one-sixth of that. A very small amount goes a very long way on white towels.
Per the Iowa DNR's manganese fact sheet, above 0.05 mg/L "the water will have a brown color and may leave black deposits on sinks and bathroom fixtures." Here's how that plays out day to day:
Groundwater is a slow traveler. Rain soaks down through soil and layers of rock, and along the way — especially in low-oxygen conditions underground — it dissolves the minerals it touches. Penn State Extension notes that "natural sources of iron and manganese are more common in deeper wells where the water has been in contact with rock for a longer time," and plenty of Iowa homes draw from exactly those kinds of wells.
It's genuinely common here. A University of Iowa CHEEC-supported study that sampled 94 private wells across ten Iowa counties in 2019 found manganese above the EPA's benchmark level in 61% of samples. These two minerals almost always travel together — they dissolve out of the same rock, they behave the same way in your plumbing, and they show up on the same water test. The difference is the color of the evidence. Iron leaves orange and rust-colored stains once it passes 0.3 mg/L. Manganese, as North Dakota State University Extension puts it, "acts similarly but causes a brownish-black stain" — and at a much lower threshold.
If your stains lean orange, iron is the headliner. If they're black or gray-brown, manganese is doing the work. Many Iowa wells have both — and sometimes a rotten-egg smell from sulfur tags along as the third sibling. One test sorts out exactly who's who.
This one feels backwards, but it's real chemistry. NDSU Extension warns that "the use of chlorine bleach and alkaline builders (such as sodium carbonate) can intensify the stains." Here's why: chlorine is an oxidizer. Pour it into wash water that carries dissolved manganese, and it converts that invisible mineral into solid black particles right there in the machine — which then settle into your fabric.
It's actually the same reaction water treatment equipment uses on purpose — just inside a tank where the particles get filtered out, instead of on your towels. Until the water itself is fixed, skip the bleach on whites and stick with regular detergent.

For small amounts of dissolved manganese, a softener can help. Penn State Extension notes that "conventional water softeners are sometimes effective for removing iron and small amounts of manganese" — but only under the right conditions, including water pH above 6.7 and dissolved iron under 5 mg/L. And there's a catch: "oxidized forms of iron and manganese will foul the softener resin." So a water softener alone is rarely the whole answer for a staining problem.
For higher levels — or manganese that's already turning to particles — the right tool is oxidizing filtration: a system that deliberately converts dissolved manganese to solids, then catches them in a filter bed before they reach your faucets. Penn State recommends oxidizing filters when combined iron and manganese run 3–10 mg/L, and NDSU notes that above 10 mg/L, "chemical oxidation followed by filtration is the accepted method." The Iowa DNR's fact sheet is blunt: "Do not boil the water. Boiling will concentrate the levels of manganese." Boiling removes water, not minerals — so whatever's dissolved just gets more concentrated in the pot.
The staining standard is aesthetic — that's the EPA's own framing. For drinking water, the Iowa DNR and Iowa HHS fact sheet notes the EPA has a separate health advisory level of 0.3 mg/L, and that "these are not enforceable standards."
