  • The regional range: Eastern Iowa tap water runs from about 3 grains per gallon to a little over 20, and the difference is almost entirely whether your city softens at the treatment plant.
  • City by city: Iowa City finishes near 3 gpg, Dubuque about 100 mg/L, Cedar Rapids 6.5–7 gpg, Center Point 17 gpg, Clinton 260 mg/L, and the Quad Cities 136–350 mg/L depending on the plant.
  • Unusual treatment towns: Maquoketa has been municipally softened since 2006, while West Liberty and Atkins run municipal reverse osmosis, so their tap water is not typical of the region around them.

Three cities that treat their water differently

A few Eastern Iowa towns do something at the plant that changes the answer entirely. If you live in one of these, your tap water is not typical of the region around it.

How to read your number

The USGS uses four hardness bands, and every number on this page falls into one of them:

  • Soft: under 60 mg/L (under about 3.5 gpg)
  • Moderately hard: 61–120 mg/L (about 3.6–7 gpg)
  • Hard: 121–180 mg/L (about 7.1–10.5 gpg)
  • Very hard: over 180 mg/L (over about 10.5 gpg)

The two units trip people up constantly. Utilities publish milligrams per liter; water treatment people talk in grains per gallon. The conversion is fixed: 1 gpg = 17.1 mg/L.

Worked example, using Marion: 18 gpg × 17.1 = 308 mg/L, which lands well above the USGS very-hard threshold of 180 mg/L. Going the other way, Dubuque's roughly 100 mg/L ÷ 17.1 = about 5.8 gpg — moderately hard. Same water, two vocabularies, one multiplication.

What your number means for equipment

Soft — under 60 mg/L (under 3.5 gpg)

You do not need a softener. What people in this band usually want is better-tasting drinking water: a reverse osmosis system at the kitchen sink, $800 for a tank unit or $900 for a tankless one, installed.

Moderately hard — 61–120 mg/L (3.6–7 gpg)

A softener is a preference, not a necessity. Homeowners in this band buy one to stop the spotting on glassware and the film on shower doors, and to be easier on the water heater. A whole-home softener is $2,500 all-in, or $2,850 bundled with reverse osmosis.

Hard — 121–180 mg/L (7.1–10.5 gpg)

This is where scale starts costing you: crusty aerators, stiff laundry, more soap and detergent than the box calls for. A standard softener at $2,500 handles it. On city water, a salt-free conditioner is $3,050 if you would rather not carry salt.

Very hard — over 180 mg/L (over 10.5 gpg)

  2. Read your utility's annual water quality report. Most systems publish one every year, often called a Consumer Confidence Report — search your city's name plus "water quality report." Hardness is frequently left out, because those reports focus on regulated contaminants. If it is missing, call the water department and ask for the finished-water hardness. They will tell you.

Two things worth knowing before you shop. First, iron: the EPA's secondary standard for iron is 0.3 mg/L and manganese 0.05 mg/L — both aesthetic standards, about staining and taste rather than compliance. Penn State Extension advises that a softener alone should only be asked to handle dissolved iron below 5 mg/L; above that you want dedicated iron treatment, which we quote after your free water test rather than off a price list. Second, nitrate: Iowa State University Extension notes that nitrate is odorless and tasteless, so it cannot be detected without a lab test, and that it is removed by reverse osmosis, distillation or anion exchange.
