About half of what pours out of a Coralville kitchen faucet began roughly 1,600 feet underground, in the Jordan aquifer. Another 30% or so starts near 500 feet in the Silurian, and the remainder comes from shallow wells around 100 feet. Most Iowa towns draw from one aquifer. Coralville draws from three and mixes them before anybody drinks it. The city's water page describes the shares this way.

Then all three go through one plant. Per the city, treatment is aeration, gravity filtration for iron and manganese, and chlorination. That is real work and it shows: orange staining on laundry and fixtures, the classic complaint on untreated deep-well water, is not a typical Coralville problem. The EPA's secondary standards for iron (0.3 mg/L) and manganese (0.05 mg/L) exist for those staining and taste reasons, and Coralville's plant is built around removing both. Aeration and gravity filtration are a metals process. Air converts dissolved iron and manganese into particles, and the filter beds catch the particles. Calcium and magnesium do not behave that way — they stay dissolved through aeration, through the filters, and through chlorination, and they come out of your faucet exactly as the limestone handed them over. There is no softening step anywhere in Coralville's process, and the city does not claim there is one.
That makes a home reverse osmosis system the first point in the chain, bedrock to glass, where dissolved solids get reduced at all. An RO pushes water through a semipermeable membrane and leaves dissolved solids behind; NSF/ANSI 58, the standard those systems are certified to, requires at least 75% reduction in total dissolved solids — a statement about what the standard demands, not a measurement of any one unit.
It also means a softener and an RO are not rival purchases here. A water softener is an ion exchange device: it trades calcium and magnesium for sodium, which ends scale and spotting, and leaves total dissolved solids roughly where they started. Scale on the showerhead and film in the dishwasher are the softener's job. Taste in a glass, in coffee and in ice is the dissolved-solids job, and that is the RO.
Coralville posts its Consumer Confidence Reports every year, and they contain no hardness figure. Neither does the city's water page. With three aquifer depths feeding one system, there is no shortcut around that: nobody can hand you a grains-per-gallon number for your address, and a figure a neighbor repeats is not evidence about your kitchen.
For scale, the USGS calls water soft below 60 mg/L, moderately hard from 61 to 120, hard from 121 to 180 and very hard above 180, and one grain per gallon equals 17.1 mg/L. Iowa City, minutes down the road, softens at its plant from about 17.5 grains raw to roughly 3 at the tap; North Liberty has run reverse osmosis and nanofiltration on its whole supply since 2018. Coralville does neither. Compare towns on our Iowa water hardness guide, but for Coralville a test at your own sink is not a sales line. It is the only place the number exists.
From an RO's point of view, the good part of Coralville's process is that the metals are already gone. Iron is a common reason a membrane fouls early on a private well outside the city limits, where nothing is treated before it reaches the house. In town, the plant handles that upstream, so the membrane's remaining job is the dissolved load — steady work, not punishing work.
Filters get changed about once a year. You can do that yourself with no effect on your warranty, or our annual plan covers all three RO filters, a water test and a full system check for $199 a year, $249 tankless. On a private well just past the city line the priorities flip entirely, and the first step out there is a test, not a purchase.
A tank system, $800, stores treated water in a small pressurized tank in the cabinet. It needs the room, and it is the only RO we will put on a private well, because well water tends to run high in dissolved solids and a tankless unit loses pressure on it.
A tankless system, $900, gives the cabinet space back and produces on demand, but it needs an electrical outlet under the sink. In plenty of Coralville kitchens that outlet exists and is either switched or already claimed by the garbage disposal. A disposal air switch is $300 and frees it up. That job is deliberately thin margin — it is not a money-maker for us, it just makes the tankless install possible.
