Benton County has three municipal water systems that solve three completely different problems. Vinton strips hydrogen sulfide out of shallow wells and runs three iron filters. Atkins built Iowa's first 100% reverse osmosis plant. Urbana pumps deep bedrock with no published treatment information at all. For scale: the U.S. Geological Survey calls water above 180 mg/L "very hard," 121–180 mg/L "hard," and 61–120 "moderately hard." One grain per gallon equals 17.1 mg/L. Just across the Linn County line, Center Point publishes 17 gpg and Hiawatha publishes 14–20 — useful context, but not Benton County numbers.
What makes this county interesting is that its three systems are drawing from genuinely different water and treating accordingly.
Vinton's wells are shallow — 90 to 122 feet into a buried channel of sand and gravel — and that water arrives with hydrogen sulfide and iron. The utility's answer is a treatment train you can picture: two aerators that literally blow the rotten-egg gas out of the water, chlorination, then three iron filters for iron and manganese, plus fluoride and polyphosphate. The system produces more than 170 million gallons a year, roughly 466,000 gallons a day. What it does not do is soften.
Atkins went the other direction entirely. Its raw well water had documented ammonia up to 8 mg/L — at the time the highest in the state — plus hardness, hydrogen sulfide, rising radium and periodic nitrite excursions. Instead of stacking fixes, the city built a full-scale reverse osmosis plant running 100 percent RO without blending, which earned a 2012 ACEC Iowa Honor Award. It is a remarkable piece of infrastructure for a town of 2,056, and it means an honest company should not walk into Atkins leading with a hard-water pitch.
Urbana is the honest blank. Iowa DNR source-water records confirm three active wells between 400 and 1,144 feet in the Silurian-Devonian, serving 1,554 people, and the DNR's Source Water Protection mapper lists Urbana on that aquifer. Beyond that there is no findable city water page, consumer confidence report, or hardness figure. We are not going to fill that gap with a guess — we will fill it with a free test at your sink.
Most of Benton County is farms and acreages, and this is where our well equipment actually earns its keep. Iowa State University extension materials note nitrate is odorless and tasteless and that reverse osmosis, distillation and anion exchange remove it, while the CDC notes boiling does not remove chemical contaminants.
If your well brings orange staining, that is iron; if it brings a rotten-egg smell, that is hydrogen sulfide; if your soap will not lather, that is hardness.
