Two aquifers, two very different risk profiles. The 2024 report describes the deep Cambrian-Ordovician sandstone and dolomite as low susceptibility — the good, well-protected Iowa standard — and then says of the shallower source: "This water supply obtains its water from the dolomite of the Silurian aquifer. The Silurian aquifer was determined to be susceptible to contamination." Both feed the same distribution system through Wells #4, #5 and #6.
That is not a warning, it is a design fact, and it is exactly the sort of thing worth knowing before you decide what to put on your own plumbing. Nitrate in the 2024 report measured 1.3 ppm against a 10 ppm limit — low — with fluoride at 0.86 ppm and barium at 0.14 ppm.
The number that stands out is sodium: 110 ppm, sampled 4/04/2022, which the report attributes both to erosion of natural deposits and to the treatment process. Sodium is not a regulated contaminant and no limit is printed beside it, but if anyone in your household watches sodium intake, that figure is why a reverse osmosis system at the kitchen tap comes up often here. Between West Branch and the Johnson County line there are a lot of acreages on private wells, and no utility reports on those.
