Water Softener Companies in Iowa City: An Honest Comparison

On the USGS hardness bands, anything under 60 mg/L counts as soft water.

So the honest starting position inside Iowa City is this: many homes here do not need a whole-home softener at all. What they usually want is better-tasting drinking and cooking water, and that is a reverse osmosis system at the kitchen sink for $800 — not a $2,500 whole-home build. If a salesperson recommends a softener in Iowa City without measuring your water first, that is the moment to slow down and ask what number they got.

Five questions worth asking before you sign

1. Did you measure my water before recommending equipment? In a city that already softens to about 3 grains, this is the first question, not the fifth. You want hardness written down in grains per gallon and iron in ppm. A color-changing demonstration on the kitchen counter shows a reaction; ask for the number instead.
2. What is the total installed price, in dollars? Not a monthly payment. If you are quoted monthly, ask for the term, the total, and whether you own the equipment at the end.
3. Who actually performs the installation, and are they licensed? Ask plainly. Ours are licensed local plumbing professionals we vet, schedule and stand behind, insured and bonded.
4. What does the warranty cover, and for how long? Ours is lifetime on parts, five years on media, one year on labor. Get any company's answer in writing rather than as a phrase like "industry-leading."
5. What happens in year six? What does a service call cost, what do replacement filters cost, and can anyone other than the seller service it? Proprietary parts mean one company owns your maintenance for the life of the system.

When an Iowa City home genuinely does need a softener

Plenty of them do, and we are not going to talk you out of one you want. Even on plant-softened water, some households simply prefer the way softened water feels in the shower, the smaller amount of soap it takes, and glassware without a faint film. That is a preference purchase, and it is a legitimate one. It is just not an emergency, and nobody should sell it to you as one.

Where the case gets stronger is outside the plant's reach. Coralville does not soften at all; by its own treatment description the city aerates, filters iron and manganese by gravity, then chlorinates. North Liberty's 2018 reverse osmosis and nanofiltration plant leaves the tap around 5 to 6 grains, and when it opened the city advised residents with softeners to dial their setting down from 10 grains to 5 or 6. Out past Tiffin and Solon on private wells there is no municipal treatment between the aquifer and your faucet, and iron, sulfur odor and sediment are the usual complaints. The Iowa DNR recommends testing a private well every year for bacteria and nitrate.
