If your Vinton tap smells like rotten eggs, the city is already treating for it. Vinton doesn't hide this. The City of Vinton's Water Department page walks through the treatment train and puts aeration for the rotten-egg compound first, in its own words: raw water "is ran through 2 aerators to remove the H2SO4 (hydrogen sulfide, rotten egg smell)." The formula is the city's own typo — H2S is the rotten-egg gas — but their parenthetical makes the intent plain.
What you will not find anywhere is a sulfur number. Vinton's 2025 Water Quality Report publishes results for trihalomethanes, haloacetic acids, lead, copper, chlorine, nitrite, fluoride, barium and sodium. Hydrogen sulfide is not in that table. Neither is hardness. Both are aesthetic properties rather than regulated contaminants, so no annual figure gets printed for either — which is worth knowing before anyone quotes you a Vinton number, because there isn't a published one to quote.
If sulfide is being stripped on the way out of the plant and your water still smells, the odor is being produced somewhere between the water main and your nose. Penn State Extension names the usual spot: "Sometimes, hydrogen sulfide may be noticeable only in the hot water in the home," and in that case "chemical reactions within the water heater may be the source of the rotten egg odor."
The mechanism is a hardware part, not a water problem. Heater tanks are steel, so manufacturers hang a sacrificial rod inside to corrode in the steel's place. Penn State: "Water heaters are fitted with a magnesium rod to inhibit corrosion of the heater. The magnesium rod can chemically reduce sulfates to form hydrogen sulfide." The Minnesota Department of Health describes the same reaction, noting the anode is usually magnesium, which "can supply electrons that aid in the conversion of sulfate to hydrogen sulfide gas."
Both sources point at the same fix, and it is a plumbing fix. Penn State says replacing the magnesium rod with an aluminum rod "should eliminate the rotten egg odor while maintaining corrosion protection for the heater," and Minnesota's guidance is to have a plumber or water system professional do the work. If that is your situation, the honest answer is that you do not need to buy a water treatment system from us.
Before you call anybody — us included — find out which taps actually smell. The Minnesota Department of Health is specific about the timing: "After you have been away from your home for a few hours, smell the water coming out of the hot and cold water faucets. Determine which faucets have the 'rotten egg' odor." Letting the water sit first is the step people skip, and it is the step that makes the answer readable.

Plainly: a water softener is not sulfur equipment. NSF/ANSI 44 is the softener standard, and softening is an exchange process aimed at the calcium and magnesium that make water hard. It is not the category anyone should sell you for an odor complaint, and if a smell is the only reason you picked up the phone, a water softener is probably not your answer.
Iron and sulfur systems are a separate category, sized to what a test actually finds.
