Hillsdale does not have a village water system on the public record, but two small private community water systems are filed under the Hillsdale name, and both have striking lab results. Illinois EPA sample records from October 2023 show the Hillsdale Estates mobile home park water at 384 mg/L hardness and 5.11 mg/L iron, and the Hillsdale Properties system at 334 mg/L hardness and 1.94 mg/L iron. EPA's secondary guideline for iron, the level linked to rusty color, orange staining and a metallic taste, is 0.3 mg/L.

Hillsdale Estates, LLC (IL1615530), which Illinois EPA's source water assessment calls the Hillsdale Mobile Home Park, serves 163 people through 65 connections from a single well 88 feet deep in shallow bedrock. Iron is not new there. When the well was sampled for the statewide groundwater monitoring network on January 22, 1987, it held 3,967 parts per billion of iron, below the state groundwater quality standard of 5,000 parts per billion. The October 16, 2023 sample taken at the system's treatment point measured 5.11 mg/L iron, 0.126 mg/L manganese, 384 mg/L hardness (about 22.4 grains per gallon) and 522 mg/L total dissolved solids. EPA's record lists chlorination as its only treatment.
For scale, EPA's secondary guidelines, which address taste, color and staining rather than health, are 0.3 mg/L for iron, 0.05 mg/L for manganese and 500 mg/L for total dissolved solids. The system's recent violations are all monitoring items: missed bacteria and chlorine monitoring in May 2025, both resolved that August, and nitrate and nitrite monitoring for January through March 2026, which SDWIS lists without a return-to-compliance date. None is a contaminant-limit violation.
Hillsdale Properties (IL1615728) is a separate, privately owned system that Illinois EPA lists as serving apartments and a residential area: 60 people through 24 connections, from one well, with chlorination as its only treatment. Its October 19, 2023 samples measured 334 mg/L hardness (about 19.5 grains per gallon), 1.94 mg/L iron, 91.9 mg/L sodium and 340 mg/L total dissolved solids. Since 2018 its SDWIS record shows bacteria and chlorine monitoring violations in 2018 and 2022, all returned to compliance. Neither public record gives a service address for either system, and neither system's numbers are a measurement of any other Hillsdale home's water.
In Hillsdale a quote can have two parts: iron and sulfur treatment, priced after the free test, and softening. On a private well the well dual-tank system is designed for that combination; on a public supply a standard water softener built from NSF/ANSI 44 certified components applies, and reverse osmosis can be added for drinking water. If your Hillsdale home has its own well, the Rock Island County Health Department is the office for private water supplies. It takes samples Monday through Wednesday; the 2022 fee schedule lists coliform bacteria at $40, coliform and nitrates at $80 and nitrates only at $40, with pick-up $20 extra, and well permits at $150 including an inspection and a sample.
