Maysville, a town of 155, has a written plan for protecting its drinking water, approved by the Iowa DNR on 4 October 2018. The federal record also shows a quieter change since then. Maysville now lists one active well instead of two, a 350-foot Silurian well, and the plant adds only a phosphate and chlorine. No hardness figure is published for the well now in service.

Source water protection planning in Iowa is voluntary, and Maysville did it anyway. Working with a specialist from the Iowa Rural Water Association, the city's operator and clerk completed a Source Water Protection Plan on 6 December 2017. The DNR's program received it that month and approved it as a Phase 2 plan on 4 October 2018, describing it as meeting the program's criteria.
The plan maps where Maysville's water comes from underground using time-of-travel capture zones: the ground that feeds the wells within two, five and ten years. The ten-year zone covers 869 acres, 633.5 of them in row crops. Even so, the plan reports that nitrate levels are very low, and it credits the geology: drilling records near Maysville show 50 to 100 feet of glacial till sitting on top of the Silurian dolomite, and the state rates the aquifer here as only slightly susceptible to contamination. Recent state samples agree, with nitrate below 0.10 mg/L in May 2025 and 0.3 mg/L at Well 2 in April 2026.
The weak points the plan names are other people's wells. Casings that have failed, wells that were never grouted, and wells abandoned without being properly plugged can all carry surface water down into the aquifer. The plan identifies ten private wells inside the capture zones, from 50 to 355 feet deep, and sets a goal of plugging unused or failing private wells with Scott County Environmental Health. It also notes that Maysville has no centralized sewer, so every home's septic system is part of protecting the town's water.
When the state inspected on 19 September 2019, Maysville ran two wells. Well #1 is 160 feet deep with a pump of about 60 gallons a minute and sits inside the same building as the treatment plant, the old fire department. Well #2 is 350 feet deep with a pump of about 75 gallons a minute. The inspector noted the wells were alternated and that the water in the system's single 3,000-gallon hydropneumatic tank was generally a mix of both. The survey lists that tank as the system's storage and pressure. The survey found no significant deficiencies.
The federal inventory now tells a different story. EPA SDWIS now records Well #1 and the shared entry point for both wells as deactivated on 26 August 2025 and lists a separate entry point for Well #2 alone as active, and the state's 2026 samples are drawn at Well 2. The records do not say why, so we will not guess.
The plan also notes naturally occurring ammonia in Maysville's Silurian water and says chlorine residuals are sometimes difficult to maintain. Sodium, for reference, measured 18 mg/L at Well 2 on 3 June 2026.
EPA SDWIS lists no violations for IA8255060 since 2018. The older entries are Lead and Copper Rule monitoring violations from 2000 and 2001, category monitoring and reporting, and Consumer Confidence Report rule violations from 1999 to 2001, category "Other". None were health-based, and all returned to compliance by 8 July 2002.

Maysville's own plan is a good reminder that private wells and the town supply share one aquifer. If your home is on a well, the Scott County Health Department will sample it without charge through Iowa's Grants to Counties program, with the analysis done by a state-certified laboratory. The department's advice is a coliform bacteria and nitrate test every year, plus after any pump or pipe repair and after drilling a new well. The program also helps pay for plugging a well you no longer use, which is exactly what the Maysville plan asks of nearby landowners, and for rehabilitating an older well.
