- Water still tests hard: Because the hardness minerals stay in the water, it will still test hard, soap scum and spotting can continue, and there is no classic slippery soft-water feel.
- Carbon tank included: The build includes a separate tank of NSF/ANSI 42 certified Jacobi coconut-shell activated carbon that handles chlorine, chemicals, taste and odor across the whole home.
- Never on wells: Kind Water Co does not install salt-free systems on well water, because wells commonly carry iron, sulfur and sediment that a conditioner does nothing about.
- Care by stage: The conditioner uses no salt or brine regeneration. The separate carbon and drinking-water stages have their own media and filter care, which we explain for the equipment selected.
Who this system is for
Some households want scale protection but genuinely do not want salt in the house — a low-sodium diet, a septic system they would rather not add brine to, no easy place to haul 40-pound bags, or simply a preference for equipment that never regenerates and never sends anything down the drain. That is who this build is for. It is a real, well-made system, and it is honest about what it does.
How salt-free conditioning is different
A conventional softener removes calcium and magnesium through ion exchange. A salt-free conditioner does not remove them at all — it changes their structure so they are far less likely to stick to surfaces and form scale. The minerals stay in your water; they just stop building up inside your pipes, water heater and fixtures the way they used to.
That difference matters, and we would rather you hear it from us than discover it later:
- Your water will still test hard, because the hardness minerals are still in it.
- Soap scum and spotting can continue, because those come from the minerals reacting with soap.
- You will not get the classic "slippery" soft-water feel in the shower.

What's actually in it
A salt-free conditioning tank
The conditioning stage uses no brine tank, salt or regeneration cycle. The separate carbon and drinking-water filtration stages are installed and maintained according to their own model requirements.

This is the piece cheaper salt-free systems leave out. NSF/ANSI 42 certified Jacobi coconut-shell activated carbon in its own dedicated tank handles chlorine, chemicals, taste and odor across the whole home — a job the conditioner itself does not do. We include it because a conditioner on its own leaves the taste and smell of city water exactly where it was.

Where we will talk you out of it
We do not sell salt-free systems on well water, and we will say so on the phone before we ever come out. Wells commonly carry iron, sulfur and sediment, and a conditioner does nothing about any of them — that is a job for a complete well water system. On very hard city water, most families end up happier with a salt-based softener, because the soap, skin and laundry difference is the part they actually notice day to day. Eastern Iowa is genuinely hard water country: Marion runs 18 to 20 grains per gallon. Salt-free earns its place where hardness is milder, or where avoiding salt matters more than chasing the last bit of performance.

Straight answers.
Does a salt-free system really soften water?
Not in the technical sense, and we will not pretend otherwise. It conditions the hardness minerals so they are far less likely to form scale, but it does not remove them, so your water still tests hard. If you want the full soft-water experience — soap lathering easily, no spotting, softer skin and hair — that is a salt-based softener.
Will I still get spots on my glassware?
Possibly, yes. Spotting comes from hardness minerals left behind when a drop of water dries, and a conditioner leaves those minerals in the water. The drinking-water stage in this build gives you clean water at the kitchen tap, but whole-home spotting is a softener's job.
Can I put a salt-free system on well water?
We do not recommend it and we will not install one on a well. Wells commonly carry iron, sulfur and sediment, and a conditioner treats none of them. A private well needs a layered system built around what your test actually shows.
How much maintenance does it need?
Almost none. There is no salt to buy and no regeneration cycle to run. The drinking-water filters get changed about once a year, and that is the whole routine.
