XL Water Softener for Large Homes

The XL is our large-home whole-home build: a water softener paired with whole-home carbon filtration, installed all-in for $2,800, or $3,150 with reverse osmosis at the kitchen sink. We size it for households of eight or more people, or homes with four or more bathrooms. It is a city water build only.

More capacity, same chemistry

It is the same two-part idea as our standard whole-home system, built larger. A salt-based softener uses ion exchange to take calcium and magnesium out of the water, so the minerals that leave scale in a water heater, dishwasher, and fixtures are no longer in it. A whole-home carbon tank sits alongside it for the chlorine taste and smell that municipal disinfection leaves behind. The XL carries more media and more capacity than the standard build, because eight residents or four full bathrooms run a very different daily volume than a three-person ranch. Our systems are certified to the NSF/ANSI standards. NSF/ANSI 44 is the standard that covers softeners, and NSF/ANSI 58 covers reverse osmosis, which requires at least 75% total dissolved solids reduction to certify.

What the XL does not do

A softener is a hardness appliance, not a drinking-water purifier — polishing what comes out of the kitchen tap is the reverse osmosis unit's job. The carbon tank is there for taste and odor, not for hardness. And nothing in this build is a well system.

Who the XL is for, and who it isn't

Two triggers, either one enough on its own: eight or more people living in the house, or four or more bathrooms. If you have four people and two and a half baths, you do not need this. The standard whole-home system is $2,500, or $2,850 with reverse osmosis, and a softener on its own without whole-home carbon is $1,900. Where you live matters too. The Cedar Rapids Water Division lime-softens the city supply from about 15.8 grains per gallon down to roughly 6.5 to 7 grains, and the Iowa City Water Division softens to about 3 grains at the plant — those utilities have already done most of the work. A large household in Marion, where The Gazette reported 18 to 20 grains untreated in 2023, is a different situation. We would rather sell you the $2,500 build and be right than the $2,800 build and be wrong. There is no XL well build — and here is what a big rural home gets instead

The XL is a city water configuration. We do not build an XL for a private well. A large rural home does not get an oversized city system; it gets the dual-tank well system, starting at $3,450, or $3,800 with a tank reverse osmosis unit. Different build, different job: well water arrives with no treatment plant in front of it and can carry iron, sulfur, or sediment alongside hardness. Penn State Extension's guidance is that a softener is generally recommended only when dissolved iron is under 5 mg/L — one of the things a free water test settles before we quote anything. The two XL upgrades worth understanding

The catalytic carbon upgrade is +$225 on an XL, and it matters in one situation: a chloraminated supply. The Cedar Rapids Water Division disinfects with chlorine mixed with ammonia — chloramine — and Robins has no wells of its own and buys Cedar Rapids water. Chloramine is harder for ordinary activated carbon media to deal with than plain chlorine, which is why catalytic carbon is the media type used on chloraminated supplies. The dual-tank city upgrade is +$700. Two tanks alternate, so soft water is available around the clock even mid-regeneration and each tank works a lighter duty cycle. We price the combined build in writing after the water test.

Installation day and what it costs to keep

Installation is usually a single visit, done by a licensed local plumbing professional. We are insured and bonded. Afterward it mostly runs itself: keep the brine tank topped off with salt — how often depends on your hardness and how much water the house uses — and regeneration handles the rest. Annual service is $199 a year on a tank-RO home or $249 on a tankless-RO home, which covers all three RO filters, a water test, and a full system check. A diagnostic service call is $199, waived the first year on systems we installed. Travel is free for the first 50 miles from Marion, then $1 per mile. Military and first responders take $100 off, and 0% financing is available.
