Iowa DNR lists Well #1 (1939, 58 feet), Well #2 (1958, 61 feet), Well #3 (1977, 67 feet) and Wells #4 and #5 (both drilled in 2006, at 50 and 64 feet). Three older wells from 1912 and 1920 are listed as not used.
At the city plant, the water is aerated, dosed with permanganate and run through sand and anthracite filters. EPA treatment records list the goal as iron and manganese removal. The plant also adds chlorine, fluoride and a phosphate corrosion inhibitor. EPA records show the older Treatment Plant #1 was retired in June 2007. A 300,000-gallon elevated tank stores the finished water.
The city’s 2025 water quality report lists nitrate at 2.7 mg/L and sodium at 17.1 mg/L after treatment.
Here is the straight answer: there is no public number. The city’s 2025 report does not list hardness, and the Iowa DNR drinking water portal has no hardness result on file for the city system. The plant removes iron and manganese, but EPA records show no softening step. Whatever hardness the wells carry comes through to your faucets.
