Kind water for every tap in your Cedar Rapids home.

Cedar Rapids lime-softens its water, taking it from about 15.8 grains at the plant to an average of 6.5 to 7 grains — here is what that means for your home, whether you need a softener at all, and what each option costs.

The problem

What’s really coming out of your tap?

Most homes deal with all three at once — and you can’t see any of them.

Chlorine & Chemicals

City water is chlorinated to kill bacteria — often more than a swimming pool. It irritates skin, eyes, and lungs, and leaves a taste and smell.

What the standards say →

Hard Water

Dissolved calcium and magnesium leave scale that clogs pipes, shortens the life of water heaters and appliances, and dries out skin and hair.

What the research shows →

Fertilizers & Pesticides

Farm runoff carries nitrate and pesticide residue into the water our cities draw from — and standard treatment isn't built to remove it.

FAQ

Questions, answered honestly.

Is Cedar Rapids water hard?
Moderately. The City of Cedar Rapids says its water is moderately hard, typically 6 to 9 grains per gallon, or 100 to 150 mg/L — softened, but not soft. Water comes into the plant at about 15.8 grains, and lime softening brings it to an average of 6.5 to 7. Some homes still notice spotty glasses and a little faucet crust at that level, and plenty of homes never do.
Does Cedar Rapids already soften its water?
Yes. Both city treatment plants use lime softening, per EPA records and the city itself, and the 2025 Cedar Rapids water quality report says that softening takes away the need for a home water softener. For a lot of families, that’s exactly right, and reverse osmosis at the kitchen sink is all they want. If you still see spotty glasses or crusty faucets at the city’s average of 6.5 to 7 grains, a softener is a comfort choice, not a must.
How much does a water softener cost in Cedar Rapids?
Every price is all-in: equipment, installation by licensed local plumbing professionals we vet, schedule and stand behind, taxes and a lifetime parts warranty. A whole-home softener is $2,500, or $2,850 with reverse osmosis. Because the city already softens, reverse osmosis alone may be all you need: $800 for a tank system or $900 tankless. Whole-home carbon is $1,150, or $1,450 for catalytic carbon. Our softeners are built from NSF/ANSI 44 certified components, and our reverse osmosis systems are certified to NSF/ANSI 58.
Is Cedar Rapids water treated with chloramine?
Yes. The city adds chlorine plus a trace amount of ammonia to finish disinfecting the water, and EPA treatment records list chloramines at both Cedar Rapids plants. Some families notice that taste and smell at the tap. If it bothers you, whole-home catalytic carbon, $1,450, is the carbon we suggest for chloramine-treated city water. One more local tip from the city: the zinc-orthophosphate it adds to protect pipes can turn household filters brown and wear them out sooner than advertised.
Do you serve my town near Cedar Rapids?
Yes. Along with Cedar Rapids, we serve Marion, Hiawatha, Robins, Ely, Fairfax, Center Point, Mount Vernon and Lisbon in Linn County, Atkins just west in Benton County, and Solon and North Liberty to the south in Johnson County, plus homes on private wells outside town. Where we install

Cedar Rapids and the surrounding area.

Robins buys its water from Cedar Rapids, so it gets the same lime-softened supply, and so does Marion’s Glenbrook Cove neighborhood. The rest of Marion, plus Hiawatha, Ely and Fairfax, pump their own wells, and EPA treatment records list no softening for any of them.
