Our Name Is Our Promise

Kind water for every tap in your Iowa City home.

Iowa City softens its water at the plant, and the city’s own 2025 report says it still reaches your tap at about 5 to 8 grains — a little hard, not a crisis, so here is what that means for your home, with honest all-in prices.

The problem

What’s really coming out of your tap?

Most homes deal with all three at once — and you can’t see any of them.

Chlorine & Chemicals

City water is chlorinated to kill bacteria — often more than a swimming pool. It irritates skin, eyes, and lungs, and leaves a taste and smell.

What the standards say →

Hard Water

Dissolved calcium and magnesium leave scale that clogs pipes, shortens the life of water heaters and appliances, and dries out skin and hair.

What the research shows →

Fertilizers & Pesticides

Farm runoff carries nitrate and pesticide residue into the water our cities draw from — and standard treatment isn't built to remove it.

See the EPA limits →

FAQ

Questions, answered honestly.

Is Iowa City tap water hard?
A little. The Iowa City Water Division’s 2025 water quality report lists total hardness of 85 to 140 mg/L, or about 5 to 8 grains per gallon — that is moderately hard on the U.S. Geological Survey scale, and just into hard at the top of the range. You might see some spots on glasses and shower doors, but it is nothing to panic about. The city’s website mentions a lower figure, but we go by its latest water quality report.
Does Iowa City already soften its water?
Yes. The city lime-softens at its water plant, EPA records list lime softening there too, and the water is also filtered through carbon and disinfected with chlorine. The city says lime softening takes out most hardness, not all of it, and that’s why some is still left when it reaches you. The city also notes some families add a home softener for zero hardness. That is a comfort choice, not a must.
What does water treatment cost in Iowa City?
Every price is all-in: equipment, installation by licensed local plumbing professionals we vet, schedule and stand behind, taxes and a lifetime parts warranty. A whole-home softener is $2,500, or $2,850 with reverse osmosis at the kitchen sink. If the hardness doesn’t bother you, whole-home carbon is $1,150, or $1,450 catalytic, and reverse osmosis on its own is $800 with a tank or $900 tankless. Bigger households can go XL for $2,800, or $3,150 with reverse osmosis. On a private well outside town, a complete well system is from $3,800.
Where does Iowa City’s tap water come from?
Mostly from shallow wells that pull Iowa River water through the sandy riverbed, per the Iowa City Water Division. Iowa DNR lists five active shallow wells, 31 to 50 feet deep, plus three active deep wells, 365 to 415 feet deep. The city blends in deep-well water to keep nitrate down, and its 2025 report lists no nitrate violation. When the shallow wells run low, it can pull straight from the Iowa River. At the plant, the water is aerated, lime-softened, run through carbon and disinfected.
